The Hidden Beauty of the Boundary Waters

February 22, 2017

The Boundary Waters is one of the most beautiful and special locations we’ve traveled to. It is located on the border of Northern Minnesota and into Ontario, Canada. We have gone to the Boundary Waters twice and have used the same outfitter both times. We booked our trips through Gunflint Lodge in Grand Marais, MN. They were a fantastic outfitter to work with. Prior to the trip, they had sent us a lot of information. We chose the lake(s) we wanted to go to as well as our food choices. We arrived on a Thursday night, checked in, and stayed in one of their cabins. We woke up early Friday morning to get our gear ready and then we were off. They had everything ready for us, from our tent to sleeping bags to food to pans and other dishes. We only had to bring clothes and personal items.

They transported us to our entry spot, unloaded our belongings, and we were off on a 4 day adventure. I have to admit it was a little nerve wracking knowing that we were by ourselves with our gear and a map, no phone service, no guide. We were off.

Once we got started, we realized how peaceful it was there. It was just us and nature. We canoed and portaged until finding a good spot to camp out for the evening.  I have to admit, canoeing was much more physically laboring than we expected, especially when the wind started up! But, it was well worth the labor to enjoy the peaceful and serene Boundary Waters.

After both of our trips, we both couldn’t wait to go back. This kind of a trip forces you to relax, slow down, and focus on the present moment. Sure, it took us a while to get there and appreciate that. But, wow, once we did, it was incredible.

On the last night of our second trip up there, Alex proposed to me under the most beautiful sunset ever. It was so special! The Boundary Waters and Gunflint Lodge will always be a special place for us.
